Braidwood Does Well on Safewise Safest Cities List

At number 35, Braidwood is the highest ranked area municipality on this year’s Safewise list of the safest cities in Illinois.  Bourbonnais is ranked 179th, Bradley comes in at 201 and Kankakee at 257 out of 269 cities.  East St. Louis came in dead last, Compton Hills in Kane County took the top spot.  SafeWise is a professional security review and comparison website.

February’s Adventure Church Fire was Arson

A member of the Adventure Church in Bradley has been arrested for allegedly setting a fire at the worship center in February that did an estimated 200,000 dollars in damage.   Bradley police say 31 year old Adam Emling, who was also a church employee, has admitted to starting the blaze and then later deleting video evidence from the video surveillance system at the church.  Emling was arrested Tuesday on initial charges of arson, criminal damage to property and obstruction of justice.

6 Past Local Serving Priests Named in Anderson Report

Of the nearly 400 Catholic priests and church staff named in Wednesday’s Anderson report on child sexual abuse in Illinois, six of them at one time served at parishes in Kankakee County.  The 185 page report by the Minnesota based law firm Anderson and Associates, details the names and assignments of 395 individuals who have been publicly accused of sexual misconduct with minors.  St. Joe’s in Bradley, St. Teresa’s, St. Rose of Lima, St. Martin of Tours, Bishop McNamara, and St. Joseph in Manteno all at one time in their past had priests on staff that are now accused of abuse.  Some allegations in the report date back to the 1930’s. Many of the accused have since died.


Man Arrested for Strangulation Over Pets

A Griffith, Indiana man is facing charges of domestic battery and strangulation after he allegedly chocked a woman, slammed her into a door and wall, then threw her to the floor.  It happened during an argument Tuesday at the victims home on the southeast of DeMotte.  The Jasper County Sheriffs police department says the woman suffered a broken knee and fractured tibia in the attack.  26 year old Caleb Johnson says the woman was injured when the two simply bumped into each other and fell to the floor.  Police say the argument began as a dispute over animals the two share.

Hari Trail Date Set

A trial date was set this week for the final member of a home grown terrorist group, based in Ford County, and charged with firebombing an Islamic Center in Bloomington, Minnesota in August of 2017.  The trail for 48 year old Michael Hari of Clarence, Illinois will begin on September 30th.  Three other members of the group have already pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. They’re also facing numerous charges in Illinois including an attempted fire bombing.


Bad Tail Light Ends in Drug Arrest

A routine traffic stop turned into a drug arrest Monday night in the 1500 block of East Court Street in Kankakee.  Police say 38 year old Andres Jimenez is facing multiple charges after methamphetamine was found in the vehicle.  He also, at first, gave police an allies for a name and was driving on a suspended license.


Shots Fired in Kankakee

City police were called 700 block of South Elm Monday morning after a man checking on a relative found five spent shell casings in the alley.  Police say it could be related to a call of shots being fired in the 1200 block of East Eagle about 4 hours earlier.  There was no damage or injury reported.


Cortese Was Passing When Killed

We have more today on Monday might’s motorcycle death of a Wilmington man.  Illinois state police say their investigation shows 30 year old Kristopher Cortese was passing another vehicle on 45/52 near the Will-Kankakee County line when he struck an oncoming van head-on and was then hit a second time by a following northbound vehicle.  Cortese was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilmington Woman Pleads Guilty to Theft

A Wilmington woman has pleaded guilty to stealing an unspecified amount of money from her Wilmington employer.  In exchange, prosecutors dropped two lesser charges.  43 year old Misty Hook allegedly took between 10 and 100,000 dollars from the D’Orazio Ford dealer between January of 2013 and August of 2014. Hook was sentenced to just two years’ probation, time served, 30 hours of community service and 2 thousand in fines and fees.

Bus, Semi Collide 10 Injured

A crash between a charter bus and a semi on I-57 near Onarga Monday resulted in minor injuries to 9 passengers on the bus and the driver.  Illinois State Police say the bus rear ended the semi because the bus driver failed to reduce speed.  The driver of the bus, 66 year old Richard Willoughby of Tuscola, was issued a citation.
