A man was struck and killed by a Northbound Amtrak passenger train last night in Kankakee. The Kankakee County Coroner’s office identifies the victim as 32 year old Rubin Rosas Jr. It happened about 8:30 Sunday night near Schuyler on the tracks between Willow and Sycamore. The train was heading from Carbondale to Chicago. No one on the train was hurt.
Momence police are providing little detail about a shooting Saturday night about 9:30 in the 200 block of 6th Street. Police says when they arrived on the scene the victim had already relocated to a restaurant parking lot where he was taken by ambulance to a Kankakee hospital. All Momence police are saying now is that the shooting was an isolated incident and under investigation. No word on the condition of the victim.
Bond has been set at 750,000 dollars for a Kankakee man charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated domestic battery. Prosecutors say 35 year old Ronald Comage allegedly stabbed his girlfriend at a home on South Evergreen last Thursday then crashed his car into a construction sign near the city police station before surrendered to officers and confessing to stabbing the woman. The Daily Journal reports police recovered the knife at the scene. The woman was treated and released.
A candlelight vigil was held for a missing rural Grant Park man over the weekend. Friends, family and former co-workers of 62 year old Dan Jarski gathered at Andrew High School in Orland Hills on a cold Saturday evening to remember the retired teacher who was the subject of an intense search at the Kankakee River State Park two days after going missing on September 9th. Jarksi’s sister vowed to never give up the search.
A fire last night at the 3 story Kankakee Commons Senior Living Center in the 100 block of West Mertens claimed the life of a resident and forced the evacuation of one wing of the complex. The woman who died was a 78 year old whose name is being withheld pending notification of family. A 79 yer old male resident was taken to Loyola Medical Center for treatment of 2nd degree burns. Also last night, fire destroyed a two story home west of Sheldon. The Sheldon fire department says the cause is believed to be a wood stove. No one was hurt but the family of 5 lost everything.
There was a fire last night at the 3 story Kankakee Kommons Senior living Center in the 100 block of west Mertens. The fire forced the evacuation of one wing of the complex. Kankakee fire saying the flames were contained a second story unit. Damage is estimated at 70,000 dollars, the cause is believed to be accidental. Two people did suffer burn wounds and we transferred to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood for treatment. Facebook posts of a fatality in connection with the blaze have not yet been confirmed.
Also last night there were reports of a structure fire near Rt. 102 and Warner Bridge road and a fire reportedly destroyed a home west of Sheldon as well. And in Manteno, flames were showing from the roof of a two story home just after midnight near 11700 north and 45/52. Manteno Fire says there were no injuries.
We have more now on an accident Wednesday afternoon on Rt. 24 in Iroquois County. Illinois State police say a vehicle driven by 70 year old Patricia Allford of Sheldon was eastbound on 24 when she attempted to pass a semi near 3100 East and struck a westbound GMC Van head on. Both vehicles then struck the back of the semi. Police say the two drivers and a passenger in the van had to be airlifted to an Urbana hospital for treatment. The truck driver was not hurt.
Bond has been set at half a million dollars for a Braidwood man arrested for possession of 119 grams of marijuana this week while on parole and wearing a home confinement ankle bracelet. Braidwood police say 28 year old Ronnie Seehafer was taken into custody after they received several tips about a drug deal going down on West First Street Tuesday night. Seehafer is also now facing charges of escape and of violating conditions of his parole.
Bradley needs a new finance director. Brian Patroska, who took the job less than a year ago, has resigned effective October 26th. The Daily Journal reports Patroska is leaving his 99,000 dollar a year job to take a financial position just 5 minutes from his Lemont home. Mayor Bruce Adams says he hopes to have someone new in place by the end of the year.
In a letter to parents Wednesday, Kankakee High School Principle, George Harris, says police were called to the school yesterday after a student allegedly handed out marijuana laced gummy bears to friends sitting at his table during morning classes. There was no mention of the student’s fate nor do we know if any of his buddies experienced a gummy bear buzz
